ENAF Achievement

Over the Forty-plus years of existence, ENAF has proved that investing in women is a powerful strategy for social transformation.  Some of the major achievements which the Foundation plans to replicate in other countries in Africa include the following:

  • The establishment of the first women-serving Bank in Kenya, that is: the Kenya Women Micro-Finance Trust (KWFT) Bank (PLC) increased access to financial inclusion for women in Kenya. While KWFT and ENAF’s Programs have reached more than 10 million women, the impact is way bigger because more local and international Banks have since opened their banking halls to women and offer various banking products tailored to women. ENAF’s investment of over Ksh 1.5 billion has seen millions of women and families access financial and non-financial solutions to operate small businesses which have ensured improved livelihoods and stabilization of families.
  • ENAF’s initiatives on Women’s Financial inclusion has contributed to increased incomes and better-quality livelihoods for the families of more than over 3Million Women in Kenya.
  • ENAF has contributed to the reduction of human rights abuses for over 1,000 girls and women through the initiatives aimed at eradicating negative cultural practices including Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) Early Marriages; Teenage Pregnancies, Period Poverty and Sex for fish (Jaboya) among others.
  • ENAF’s initiatives have contributed to an increased number of women in leadership and decision-making processes at all levels. For instance, the number of women elected and nominated at the national Assembly in 2013, 2017 and 2022 was 21, 29 and 35 respectively. These numbers represent a gradual but steady increase of 5.6% in 2013 to 6.6% in 2017 and to 7.8% in 2022.
  • Over the years, at least 20% of beneficiaries of ENAF’s initiatives are young people (age 18 – 35) while 5% are women with disabilities.
  • ENAF has built a network of over 3Million women across the country who continue to serve as the bedrock for all initiatives including Climate-resilience programming. Beneficiaries include women who have received Water tanks; participated in tree growing or benefited from climate-smart fish technology such as Fish Cages, solar lamps and fridges.
  • ENAF’s interventions continue to impact on the leadership of the County  Governments through policy and legislative changes – all intended to create a more  inclusive environment .
  • ENAF maintains the highest standards of good governance including financial prudence. Clear separation between the Board and Management is adhered to while financials are audited by both internal and external Auditors.
  • ENAF partners with diverse Development Partners including UN agencies such as the UN Women, Mastercard Foundation; Hans Seidel Foundation; Mennonite Economic Development Associates (MEDA); Open Society ( OESEF); Grant Challenges Canada (GCC); URAIA Trust; Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office ( FCDO) among others.
  • ENAF has built capacity for over Twenty (20) Local Implementing Partners (LIPs) who serve as the primary connection with communities at the lowest levels.
  • Over the years, ENAF has established strong partnerships with national and County Governments. These partnerships have enabled ENAF to influence policies, legislation and enhanced the culture of inclusion especially for women.
  • Invaluable moral and financial support has come from ordinary Kenyans of goodwill – every shilling counts.

In the coming years, ENAF plans to use the above successes  and catalyzing model of development to promote gender equality in other countries in Africa.  The 2025 – 2027 Strategic Plan is an articulation of this expansion strategy.
